Cultural Connection

Words by Dr. Emily Cormack
Melbourne Curator and Art Consultant

Melbourne is widely regarded as Australia’s cultural capital, with many of its foremost destinations for visual and performing arts only moments from 437 St Kilda Road.

“St Kilda Road has been central to Melbourne's performing arts industry and will continue to be this into the future”

DR EMILY CORMACK - MELBOURNE CURATOR AND ART CONSULTANT

National Gallery of Victoria

The National Gallery of Victoria (NGV), founded in 1861, is Australia’s oldest and most visited art museum. Spanning two landmark sites (NGV International on St Kilda Road with its signature moat and The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia at Federation Square) it houses collections that embrace international, Australian, and First Nations art.

The NGV is also renowned for presenting landmark exhibitions that attract global attention.

Arts Centre Melbourne

Arts Centre Melbourne anchors the city’s arts precinct beneath its illuminated spire.

A destination for theatre, ballet, opera, and live music, it brings together premier venues, including Hamer Hall for symphony concerts and the opulent State Theatre, as well as the open-air Sidney Myer Music Bowl set in lush parklands along St Kilda Road.

Melbourne Recital Centre

Melbourne Recital Centre is a world-class concert venue celebrated both for its striking honeycomb façade and its acoustic excellence. Its performance spaces include Elisabeth Murdoch Hall, designed specifically for chamber and classical music, and the intimate Primrose Potter Salon.

It remains a favourite for international performers and discerning local audiences alike.

Buxton Contemporary

Buxton Contemporary opened in 2018, adding a distinctive contemporary voice to the Melbourne Arts Precinct.

Known for its bold modern architecture as well as its exceptional collection, the gallery features four exhibition spaces that showcase dynamic Australian and international practice.

It has quickly become recognised for thought-provoking installations and as a destination for those following trends in contemporary art.
